Maybe you’ve heard about “The Perfect Trip,” a competitor’s vision for using technology to eliminate traveler-supplier friction.  We believe in things going well for travelers—no disagreement there.  The question is whether technology by itself is adequate to produce the desired results.

Let’s look at a simpler relationship:  the one between an expense management supplier and its customers. Implementing and supporting expense management systems involves listening, accommodation, organization, a little wisdom, creativity, persistence and follow-through.  No one’s technology is so advanced that these qualities don’t matter anymore.  Sure, it’s inconvenient and expensive that not all customers can live with “one size fits all”.

It’s inconvenient and expensive that suppliers need to employ experts to work closely with their customers over an extended period of time.  Personal service in general is inconvenient and expensive for the supplier—it would be great for the supplier if it all could be replaced by technology, but maybe it isn’t always about the supplier…
