2019 GSA Per Diem Rates & Mileage Rates Updated - DATABASICS

*Updated January 30, 2019 with updates for 2019 GSA per diem mileage and 2019 GSA per diem rates.*

The GSA (General Services Administration) has issued the 2019 per diem rates to go into effect on October 1st, 2018.

2019 GSA Per Diem & Mileage rates Updated

Most locations within the continental United States (CONUS rates) are slightly higher than the 2018 per diem rates:

  • $149 per day in the lower 48 states for regular (non high-cost) localities
  • A full list of high-cost localities & non-standard locations is here: Notice 2018-77

What's the difference between a low-cost and a high-cost city? That's determined by the GSA based on historical data. That means that where you travel will determine your per diem because some cities cost less to travel to and stay in than others. This per diem is meant to cover expenses for lodging and meals for federal travelers.

According to the GSA "FY 2019 Per Diem Highlights, "most of the CONUS (approximately 2600 counties) are covered by the standard CONUS per diem rate of $149 ($94 lodging, $55 meals and incidental expenses). In fiscal year (FY) 2019, there are 325 Non-Standard Areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard CONUS rate. "

You can see which cities remain on the list here.

What it means for employers:

If you're planning a trip, be sure to look up which cities are still on the list for NSAs, and make adjustments as necessary to your per diem calculations. You might already be planning some trips during 2019, so it's a smart idea to be prepared.

What it means for our customers:

Because our per diem engine receives automatic updates from the GSA with the current year's rates (depending on the city), our customers don't need to make any changes. Simply use our per diem management tool as usual.

2019 GSA per diem mileage updates

In addition, mileage reimbursement rates have been updated. These rates are relevant for government employees operating an automobile while traveling.

According to the IRS, the 2019 GSA per diem standard mileage rate is "58 cents per mile driven for business use, up 3.5 cents from the rate for 2018." Be sure to keep this change in mind as you travel in 2019!

An automated per diem management and mileage tracking system can do a lot of good for many companies. The software has gotten more intelligent and easier to use and easier to implement. Nowadays, you can even manage per diems and do mileage tracking for federal employees on your phone or tablet.
